TV moment for Bermuda doctor in Haiti

A Bermuda resident doing aid work in Haiti will be featured in a television programme by Canadian network CBC.

Tiffany Keenan, an emergency room doctor at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, said she met the television crew while they were filming in Port au Prince.

She said: “I convinced them to fly to Cap Haitian to document the spread of cholera in the region and the lack of supplies and personnel that we are facing.

“The death rate in Cap Haitian is the highest in the country with some quotes as high as 15 percent.

“My small clinic in the north has been turned into a cholera treatment centre and we are managing with limited resources while offering 24/7 care.”

The television programme was expected to air either last night or tonight, she said.

Dr Keenan arrived in the Caribbean nation last week and has since been working with a small team of Canadian doctors and nurses through her charity Haiti Village Health.

Her clinic has grappled with a growing number of cholera cases and was also affected by riots, which resulted in delays in getting medical supplies.

The violent protests targeted UN peacekeepers in Haiti, and also made it difficult to transport critically ill patients to the hospital half an hour away.

Despite the challenging environment, Dr Keenan e-mailed The Royal Gazette on Friday to say: “I’m doing okay in Haiti.

“The riots have settled and we were able to enter the country without difficulty. The election is on Sunday and the streets of Cap Haitian are quiet at the moment.”

She said water devices donated from the Sandys Rotary Club last year were proving to be real lifesavers.

“We’ve been distributing chlorine daily and will go to the general market tomorrow. I will definitely be doing a follow-up [meeting] with Rotary on my return to Bermuda,” she added.
