Biennial artist to give lecture at BNG today
Today's lunchtime lecture at the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) should be a piece of cake for one Biennial artist.
John Gardner work is an installation of 100 Bermuda stone cakes with 400 candles representing every year of Bermuda's settlement since 1609. This massive work more than 10' by 10' is wall hung and weighs over 100 lbs.
Mr. Gardner will give away a stone cake via lottery, to attendees of the talk. "This installation is a once in a lifetime project with the potential to act as a defining symbol for the 400th Anniversary of Bermuda," the architect said. "The candles, bent and blown out, have the capacity to be a personal and poetic recollection of the moment a wish is granted."
He wanted to share the work with others. But he said giving away a cake was a symbolic act.
"Normally, the viewer is encouraged not to touch work," he said. "By giving a cake away at the talk I wish to facilitate people's contact with artwork and to break the norm that a work is singular and sacrosanct. Also it could be, if passed on, a fun gift or collectable."
The original installation is available for acquisition before the exhibition closes at the end of November. Artist Tina Hutchings will also speak at today's lecture.
