Fire damages old recycling plant building

Hamilton Fire Station Fire Investigator Sgt. Albouy takes photos inside Devon Springs Recycling Plant Devonshire after an early morning blaze.

Three separate fires broke out on Wednesday at the Devon Spring's Recycling Centre causing an estimated $15,000 worth of damage.

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service is unsure of what caused the system fire, which ripped through the western part of the building and through part of the roof shortly after midnight, however, they are not ruling out foul play.

"Arson hasn't been ruled out because the investigation is ongoing" said Lieutenant Wenda Roberts, Media Relations Officer for the Fire Service.

Seventeen officers and six fire vehicles responded to the blaze at 12.26 a.m. On arrival they could see the fire through the roof on the west side of the building. Four firefighters in breathing apparatus gained entry to the site and, after roughly 15 minutes, were able to extinguish the three fires inside.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after 1.10 a.m., and noticed that the inside of the building received substantial smoke damage and moderate structural damage, while the roof was damaged extensively. There were no reported injuries. The only other real damage caused to the Devonshire site, explained Lt. Roberts, was a pile of old computer equipment burned at the front of the building.

The Devon Springs Recycling Centre has been closed and locked up since April 2007, when a new facility opened at the Government Quarry on Harrington Sound Road in Hamilton Parish.

An investigation is currently underway and may take several weeks before the cause of the blaze is determined.
