W&E –civil servant questioned in cheque forging probe
Police have arrested Government's Chief Architect Lawrence Brady in connection with the probe into copies of cheques allegedly forged to frame top politicians.
It's understood Mr. Brady was arrested at his home yesterday morning and taken for questioning before being released on Police bail without charge.
A Police spokesman would only say: "At this moment inquiries into this matter are on-going and Police will not comment any further."
And Mr. Brady's lawyer Saul Froomkin would not comment.
Government said it had found a copy of a cheque for $14,780 to 'Dr. E. Brown' in Works and Engineering files in February in what the Premier claimed was an attempt to make it seem like he received kickbacks over the controversial Police-court building project in Hamilton.
Scorpio Construction boss Adlia Davy has since said the cheque was in fact given to his company, implying somebody must have doctored the copy to frame Dr. Brown.
And another cheque copy, for $10,000, was found made out to "D. Burgess" from contractors Landmark Lisgar Construction which Government also said was part of a smear attempt.
