The Bermuda Regiment was at Morgan's Point n Saturday, to teach the soldiers different tasks they will under take if a hurricane hits the Island. Above, Cpl. Smith cuts down a tree as soldiers look and learn. Below, Pte. Morbrey is ready to operate a chainsaw.

While the first tropical storm of the year, Alma, struck Nicaragua, Bermuda's Emergency Measures Organisation met to prepare itself for what it fears could be a busy hurricane season.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, Senator David Burch, was attended by Governor Sir Richard Gozney along with members of the Regiment, Police, Fire Service and representatives from the Ministries of Works and Engineering, Health, Tourism and Transport.

The main focus of the meeting was to ensure that all the organisations are prepared for a natural disaster.

In the event of a natural disaster, it is the EMO's job to organise government agencies, utility services and private agencies to help prevent injuries or loss of life, along with distributing information.

Along with preparing ministries and services for the possibility of a hurricane, Sen. Burch also used the opportunity to encourage Bermudians to prepare themselves for storms.

"We wish to continually remind residents that in the event of a storm, the best defence is to ensure that their personal supply kits are updated," he said.

An emergency kit should include flashlights, batteries, food, water and first aid equipment. Households with infants are asked to remember the child's needs during preparations.
