Driver was three times over the alcohol limit

A landscaper was banned from the road for a year after he was found driving with a blood-alcohol level more than triple the legal limit.

Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Kiellor told Magistrates’ Court police were on patrol on Middle Road, in Warwick, on October 17 when they saw Mario Mello.

The 31-year-old was driving west in the eastbound lane.

Mello swerved back into the correct lane before reaching the police vehicle, but officers had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Police turned around and, while following the Devonshire man, saw him again swerve into the eastbound lane.

The officers pulled Mello over and, after noticing the smell of alcohol, arrested him on suspicion of impaired driving.

Mello was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where an alco-analyser revealed his blood alcohol level was 270 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, more than triple the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Mello pleaded guilty to driving while impaired. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
