Hot-shot Daniels qualifies for state championships
Promising golfer Terence Daniels has qualified for next month's Arizona Amateur Championships after carding an 11-under-par 133 at the weekend's Western Amateur tournament in Arizona.
Teeing off at the 6,553-yard Yuma Golf and Country Club lay-out, the 21-year old Smith's Parish resident carded blazing rounds of 67 and 66 to finish the 36-hole event one shot behind eventual winner Blake Brown (132).
Daniels and Brown battled right down to the wire before a missed birdie attempt by Daniels on the last hole gave his rival the title by a single stroke.
The Bermudian was steady throughout the tournament, making a remarkable 12 birdies and an eagle on the last day at the par-five 14th after his approach from 230 yards left him with an easy four-foot putt which he nailed to go five-under for the round and keep the pressure on the leader.
He had just three bogeys and managed 30 greens in regulation.
"I am really pleased with the way I played, it's the lowest two total score of my career," Daniels told The Royal Gazette.
"I felt composed throughout the tournament and my overall game was on point."
It was the Grand Canyon University student's best finish to date at this level.
Earlier this year Daniels helped his school qualify for the National Championships for the fourth straight year where they finished 15th overall.
His second round score of six-under-par 66 was the second lowest round of the two-day tournament.
John Davis had the lowest round, carding a seven-under-par 65 on the last day.
n Young golfer Damian Palanyandi fired the shot of the day during Bermuda Golf Association's Monthly Medal at Riddell's Bay on Saturday when he had a hole-in-one at the par-three 11th.
Watched by his father, Damian holed out with a well struck sand wedge.
And to complete a memorable day, Palanyandi fired the lowest round of thet tournament, 72.
Ryan Benevides (73) was next best followed closely by Nicholas Mansell (75).
