Regional police, military chiefs to meet here

Bermuda will host the tenth meeting of Caribbean Commissioners of Police and Military Chiefs next month.

Senator and Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, David Burch announced the meeting as he presented his trip to the CARICOM fifth meeting of Ministers Responsible for National Security and Law Enforcement. That meeting had been held between April 3 and 5 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Sen. Burch said the trip was useful and Bermuda's relationship with CARICOM could only be strengthened with the meeting next month. Some of the topics covered included: CARICOM arrest warrant treaty, Draft regional crime and security strategy, draft regional anti-cyber crime strategy and common CARICOM visa.

Sen. Burch added: "You will clearly see that some of these topics might be of little interest to us, likewise others are of great interest, but let me put our participation in perspective. Bermuda has a seat at the table and a vote on issues that directly affect us."

Next month's meeting will "further strengthen the bond within the region and provide us with opportunities to take advantage of training opportunities for both our Police Service and Regiment as we work toward expanding the role of our regiment."
