Mother angered that seven-year-olds were put off PTB bus

A group of primary school students were reportedly pulled off a bus and forced to continue their journey on foot after all the students on the bus were being rowdy.

The matter was brought to The Royal Gazette by way of a letter to the editor. The concerned parent wished to remain anonymous.

In the letter, the mother explains her seven-year old daughter, a student of a public school, was on the number three bus on Tuesday, December 16 headed to Bermudiana Road to meet her along with a group of students from the same school.

She explained: "It is my information that the bus passengers, including middle school students were being loud and were told to be quiet.

"The bus driver became very angry and threatened to not allow the children to continue their journey. She followed through with this threat and kicked all of the primary school children off of the bus at the Cenotaph."

The mother said the walk from the Cenotaph to Bermudiana Road is about 15 minutes, double that for a minor.

She added it was a total of 14 children who were removed from the bus and expected to find their parents. "It is appalling to think that my child and a group of six to eight-year old decided to walk the bus route, along the entire length on Front Street, unto Bermudiana Road.

"They had no clue where they were at the time, yet decided to follow the road and find a place that was recognisable to them.

"One child decided to cross the street, in the midst of all the busy traffic and tried to attend their other parents' job."

She continued: "What I find disconcerting is that the middle school children were not given the same treatment, having been allowed to remain on the bus and complete their journey to the bus terminal.

"If there are many passengers on the bus, it would be very hard to determine the sole cause of the noise. The mother said it didn't matter how loud the children were, the fact that they are minors should have been the reason why they should have stayed on board.

"This is very disturbing and I am appalled at the bus drivers' actions. I am aware that children can be unruly at time, however this does not in any way warrant minors to be dismissed from a public transportation vehicle.

"This is a school bus and in my view it is supposed to transport children to their intended destination", she added.

The woman said the bus driver should have filed a complaint with the school instead of kicking the children off of the bus. She said it took her daughter 30 minutes extra to meet her.

The mother also said her child would no longer be participating in Government's initiative to provide free transportation for schoolchildren.

A response was not available from the Public Transport Board at press time.
