PLP chairman backs Budget
Progressive Labour Party chairman David Burt has thrown his party's support behind the 2009/2010 budget.
"The fact that our Government is able to expand services and provide a strong and stable social safety net during these tough economic times is a testament to the sound fiscal management of Minister Paula Cox and the PLP Government team," said Mr. Burt in a statement yesterday.
He particularly applauded what he described as a commitment to social programs, which he said remains vitally important to PLP supporters.
Finance Minister Ms Cox pledged on Friday that the free child day care programme, free public transportation for students and free tuition at the Bermuda College will all continue.
She also promised unemployment assistance for those in need, an upgraded health care plan for seniors named FutureCare and stamp-duty breaks for some first-time home buyers.
Hailing the news, Mr. Burt said: "A big tax break for first-time home buyers. DayCare now serving 300-plus families. Relief for the unemployed. No new taxes.
"And, most importantly, FutureCare is on track for April 2009. This fiscally sound budget provides an expanded social safety net, creates and protects jobs and ensures that Bermuda's business environment remains strong, stable and competitive."
