Tourist fined for having cannabis

A New Jersey man was fined $1,500 yesterday after bringing cannabis into the Island.

John Volin, 56, of Grove Street Wanaque, NJ, arrived on the Island on Tuesday with 1.16 grams of cannabis in his wallet. Magistrates' Court heard that Volin had gathered his luggage and was standing in line for customs when a sniffer dog alerted him to officers.

Volin was taken to the secondary inspection area where a homemade cigarette in a plastic bag was found in his wallet. He later admitted he knew it was illegal to bring cannabis here.

Reggae artists to sign autographs

International reggae artists ShineHead, Nahki, Schreechy Dan, Bobo General and James Bond will be on hand to sign autographs this afternoon at CellularOne on Burnaby Street.

The five artists will be performing in the Veterans in Action Part Two concert tomorrow at the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation at 8.30 p.m. In addition to the autograph signing, CellularOne will raffle off a BlackBerry Pearl.

CellularOne's COO, Michael Leverock said: "We are very excited to host the Veterans in Action artists at our CellularOne Burnaby Street location. We'd like to extend an invitation to all the fans and public to come and get an autograph and try their luck at winning a BlackBerry Pearl."

Flatts Bridge junction closed Sunday

Flatts Bridge junction will temporarily close on Sunday for resurfacing of the roadway.

The road closure will affect North Shore Road on Flatts Village at the junction of North Shore Road and Middle Road (Flatts Hill) from 7.30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and traffic will be restricted to single lane use and manual traffic signals.

The Ministry of Works and Engineering apologises for any inconvenience that may result and would like to encourage the full cooperation of the motoring public.

Teen found with cannabis

An 18-year-old Devonshire man was given a $1,000 fine after pleading guilty at Magistrates' Court to possession of cannabis.

On March 20, Jon Dill, who fitted the description of a burglary suspect, was stopped by police on the Railway Trail in Warwick.

Dill, of Mary Victoria Road, was searched by Police who found a homemade cigarette in his clenched fist containing 0.08 grams of cannabis.
