Book on cricket 'champ' Hunt enters the national library

Taking delivery: Joanne Brangman, head librarian of the Bermuda National Library, accepts a copy of 'Champ! The One and Only Alma Hunt' from author Ira Philip.

Sports legend Alma Victor "Champ" Hunt is the focus of a book donated to the Bermuda National Library yesterday.

Well-known author and historian Ira Philip presented a deposit copy of his book, 'Champ! The One and Only Alma Hunt', to the library's new Bermuda History and Cultural Studies Room.

Mr. Hunt, who was born in 1910 and died in 1990, is considered by many to be one of the finest cricket players Bermuda has ever produced.

He was a former Somerset Cricket Club and Cup Match player, best known for his heroics on the field of play, as a top batsman, medium pace bowler and slip fielder.

Mr. Hunt and his five brothers all played for Somerset in Cup Match. He was also a professional cricketer with Aberdeenshire in Scotland and represented Scotland in 1938 when his team played against Australia and Yorkshire.

Mr. Hunt then attended Columbia University and came home to be a physical education teacher.

He later became well-respected as a cricket administrator and journalist. He was posthumously inducted into the Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
