Prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said on Friday that James P. Zawacki, of New Jersey, arrived at the Civil Air Terminal last Monday.

"While going through Customs, officers found 9.74 grams of cannabis in a plastic bag in Zawacki's right sock,'' Insp. Duffy said.

Duty counsel Mr. Rod Attride-Stirling said: "He brought the cannabis down for his personal use.

"Zawacki was given the drugs as a wedding gift. He had no idea that Bermudian courts would deal with cannabis as hard as they do.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis said: "American courts have been telling people that overseas courts deal with this type of thing very harshly.''
