As of last night, Tropical Depression Number 5 was expected to pass within 188 nautical miles of Bermuda at 3 p.m. on Friday, a forecaster at the US Naval Oceanography Command Facility said.

That was close enough to bring rain, or a variety of other effects, depending on how the storm developed and how it passed.

But the storm was not forecast to become a hurricane. If it passed within 188 miles as a tropical depression, it could bring some rain, thunderstorms and winds, but not gale force winds, the forecaster said.

As of 6 p.m. last night, the tropical depression was centred 335 nautical miles southeast of the Island. Its winds were at 30 knots, with gusts to 40 knots.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dennis was 1,874 nautical miles southeast of the Island last night, and not considered a threat.

Dennis would pass within 1,245 miles of Bermuda on Friday afternoon.
