Airlines `must extend discounts'
extend their discount flights to the Island. Mr. David Dodwell says an extended scheme would help the drive to improve the gloomy tourism picture.
Mr. Dodwell said that he supported the new marketing initiative by hotels, the Department of Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce. But he spoke after releasing gloomy projections for hotel occupancy over the coming three months.
Occupancy levels for September are 60.9 percent, October 47.4 percent and November 41.8 percent, compared with last year's figures of 57.8, 47.6 percent and 34.8 percent respectively.
The final occupancy of hotels for August was 71.6 percent compared with 82.3 percent. But the 1991 and 1992 figures are well down on the 1990 projection totals.
Mr. Dodwell said: "Although projections, based on bookings, are close to 1991, last year was a terrible year. They are well down on 1990 which was not a good year.''
