You want to jump up and dance
By Courtney D. Smith, age 10 Johnny the Caucasian Gombey, by Daron Lowe, is a wonderful Bermuda interactive CD-ROM.
This creative story, nicely animated, shows spunk and originality! It certainly is a lively piece and is narrated by a lovely female voice with an English accent. There are great sound and visual effects displayed throughout and it is very exciting.
The story is about a Caucasian boy named Johnny who wants to be a gombey.
His friends don't think he could be one, although Jamar observed him swaying to the sound of distant drums one day.
One of his Bermudian friends, Jamar, is a gombey. He twists his ankle while he is playing and is supposed to perform that night on Front Street.
Jamar asked Johnny to take his place, which he very happily does. Johnny's mask falls off while he was performing.
Jamar explains what happened to the surprised troupe leader, who loves Johnny's dancing, and he becomes a member of the gombey troupe.
Johnny gives a super performance and dances to real gombey music, very rhythmic and lively, which makes the listener want to jump up and dance! It typifies the sound of real Bermudian gombey music with drums and whistles.
Johnny dances in a fantastic Bermudian gombey costume. The exciting and vibrant colours in the costumes and masks are: reds, blues, greens, yellows, purples and oranges.
The main characters are Johnny, and his Bermudian friends, Jamar, Sara, Keisha, and Shannon.
Johnny the Caucasian Gombey is easy to read-along with. It is colourful and has Bermuda houses in the background, along with a scene of Front Street.
It will work on your computer because it is compatible with Macintosh OS and Windows 98, NT (Minimum Pentium II).
I would highly recommend this 15-minute story about Bermuda gombeys for young children ages two to eight ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINERS ENT REVIEW REV
