Best may get reprieve: BFA discuss new deal for technical director
Technical director Clyde Best could be given a reprieve by Bermuda Football Asscociation's executive.
Sources have suggested that Best, who just before Christmas was stunned to be told that his contract would not be renewed in May, could be offered a deal which would allow him to remain in charge throughout Bermuda's World Cup qualifying campaign.
However, the BFA would again review his position later in the year.
It is likely that any new agreement will call on Best to submit to a number of changes to the terms of his initial three-year deal.
Best is also understood to be planning to put a number of new options on the table himself.
BFA general secretary David Sabir refused to comment on the coaching situation yesterday, claiming that there was nothing to reveal about the matter at the moment.
Best was also reluctant to comment on negotiations, insisting that now wasn't the time to discuss his current position or his contract.
However, sources within the BFA claim that a short extension could be offered -- with a number of new conditions.
The revelations are surprising since the BFA issued a statement that the decision on Best's future had been made "in the best interest of the association's coaching programme''.
And the fact that his departure was backed unanimously by the coaching committee and supported by the BFA executive also suggested that the there would be no going back -- even in the face of a public backlash.
However, the possible change of heart may have been caused by the realisation that Best would be going at a particularly busy time on the international calendar, with World Cup and Olympic qualifiers due in the spring.
What is known is that BFA president Nevill Tyrrell and Best haven't seen eye to eye during his tenure. Best emphasised this when the president announced that he would not be retained.
"We didn't get on from day one,'' said Best. "But you don't have to like people to work with them. If he put his head around my door to see what was happening at all, it was only once.
"I think he is arrogant and he holds his head up high in the air and he's not my type of person. He's certainly not a football person.
"Now I hope the people of Bermuda have the gall to do the right thing. People like Mr. Tyrrell need to be dug out.''
