Rangers eager to make amends for relegation
1999-2000 season another two weeks when they meet in the semi-final of the FA Cup at BAA Field tonight (9.00).
And while Colts will be motivated by the prospect of defending another title they won last year, Rangers will aim to lift themselves from the disappointment of another relegation. The winners will meet North Village in the final on April 30.
"It's been rough with the disappointment of being relegated but this is the FA Cup semi-final,'' said Rangers coach Earl Basden yesterday.
The first year coach said he expected his players to be more determined to win and so prove they were capable of beating the top teams.
"The players feel as if they have let themselves down so it's time to reward themselves,'' said the coach.
Rangers had it all to play for in their last game against Somerset when victory would have moved them to safety, but the Trojans won 1-0 at Southampton Oval to secure their own place in the Premier Division.
"Our season has basically been like that, we failed to put away some chances and it cost us,'' said Basden.
Rangers will be at a disadvtange in that they have not played since they were relegated on April 2. With this semi-final then postponed two days later, Rangers haven't had a match in more than two weeks.
"We've had a couple of sessions where we've had some numbers out,'' said the coach.
Colts were last in action nine days ago when they beat PHC in the Friendship final, a match Basden watched.
"I thought they played quite well, but it's encouraging to know that every time Colts and Rangers play there's always been a battle and it's been decided by the odd goal. I'm hoping we will be playing on the 30th.'' For three Rangers players, Kwame Tucker, Janeiro Tucker and Ryan Belboda, cricket is just around the corner so they still have both sports on their minds as the league champions gear up for the defence of their title.
