Lightbourne's City suffer Cup upset
by Blackpool in the second round of the English League Cup last night when the Second Division side scored a shock 1-0 home win in the first leg.
Lightbourne, an unused sub in Saturday's 1-0 win over Southampton, was inserted into the Coventry starting line-up along with Danish striker Martin Johansen. And after 15 minutes he went close to scoring when his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Steve Banks' foot after the Bermudian had been set up by Gary McAllister.
Early in the second half Lightbourne laid on a good pass for Johansen from Banks' weak goalkick but the Dane shot wide. Midfielder McAllister missed a glorious chance in the 69th minute when, from in front of goal, he shot against a post.
Blackpool made Coventry pay for that miss in the 76th minute when Dave Linighan scored the only goal of the game when he headed in a free kick from Nicky Mellon.
Blackpool travel to Coventry's ground next week for the second leg, hoping to add another major scalp to their collection after their win over First Division Manchester City in the first round when they won 1-0 at home and then clinched the tie on penalty kicks at Maine Road.
Tonight, another Bermudian, Shawn Goater, will be hoping to help Bristol City achieve victory in their League Cup first leg tie at Premier League Leeds United. Goater scored his fifth goal of the season on Saturday when he netted with a glancing header in the second half of their 2-1 away loss to Wrexham.
