FA Cup saga will be decided in arbitration
A dispute between St David’s and the Bermuda Football Association will go to arbitration tomorrow.
St David’s are at odds over the BFA’s decision to allow their First Division rivals Southampton Rangers back into the FA Cup competition after being kicked out for fielding an ineligible player against them during cup tie at Lord’s last month.
Rangers beat St David’s 4-2 in the January 19 tie but were forced to forfeit the win after it emerged second-half substitute Najiyah Raynor was not listed on their teamsheet.
Rangers appealed against the BFA competitions committee’s ruling which was upheld by the association’s appeal committee upon further scrutiny.
As a result of the appeal committee’s decision, the competitions committee scheduled a replay.
However, the replay that was scheduled to be played at the National Sports Centre North Field on February 13 was postponed after St David’s refused to play in protest against the BFA’s decision to allow their opponents back into the competition.
Otis Minors, a St David’s player and member of the club’s management committee, later confirmed that his club had taken their case to the Alternate Dispute Resolution arbitration panel, at the sports ministry.
“We are taking this to arbitration; we have appealed it,” Minors said. “It’s unjust, and the timing is not right, we sent a letter stating that this case is going to arbitration.”
The BFA also expressed concerns over the appeal committee’s decision in a press release advising the public of St David’s refusal to in the replay.
“The association wishes to advise that the decision by the appeal committee causes concern and therefore is exploring options to address this concern,” the BFA press release stated.
The appeal committee overturned the decision to kick Rangers out of the competition but upheld the competitions committee’s decision to fine the club $150 and impose one game suspensions on both Raynor and coach Jomar Wilkinson.
The outcome of the arbitration process will determine who BAA, the inaugural FA Cup winners, will play against in the quarter-final of the competition.
