Highlights of benefits to employees under the new Employment Act:

No unauthorised docking of wages Eight days paid sick leave a year Eight weeks paid plus four weeks unpaid maternity leave* (eight weeks unpaid leave if employee has worked for less than one year) Unlimited time off to attend ante-natal classes for pregnant employees* Bereavement leave is three days unpaid or five days unpaid if travelling abroad Employers must allow time off for court duty, voting, meeting of Government boards, Bermuda Regiment, Reserve Police, Senate or House of Assembly Notice is one week if weekly paid, two weeks if bi-weekly paid and one month in any other case Employers cannot sack employees for complaining about their treatment Employees can take an employer to tribunal for unfair/constructive dismissal * After one year of service
