Rosemarie Pedro of the Coalition for Affordable Housing said that after the General Election, she wanted to give the new Government an opportunity to organise themselves before she approached them on these crucial issues.

But, after eight months, she said it was time to stop paying "lip service'' to the problem and time to address it head on with concrete proposals and action.

"This Government needs to be seen to be doing something,'' she said.

Coreen Tucker of the National Tenants and Future Homeowners Association echoed Ms. Pedro's concerns.

She explained to The Royal Gazette that the number of people affected by housing problems was increasing every week.

"Even middle income families are affected,'' she said and explained that such people could not afford the size homes that they needed but also did not qualify for any kind of assistance because both partners were in secure and well-paying jobs.

Ms Pedro said that when people are having to deal everyday with something as basic as the lack of proper housing, there was a rebound impact on their productivity which was ultimately costing the whole country.

What they want to see at the end of the day is the Government putting controls in place and using the former base lands to the best advantage of the Bermudian people.
