Among the occupations listed in the report, reflecting the realities of the modern marketplace, were a number of technology-based positions. Several of these were profiled in depth to allow young people to gain better insight into a career in computing.

Among the profiles was that of the computer programmer/analyst (Bermuda Standard Code of Occupations category 0.83.10).

In 1995, the report reveals, 170 computer programmer positions were recorded in Bermuda. Non-Bermudians held 109 of these, or about two-thirds, suggesting there are considerable job opportunities for Bermudians in this rapidly-growing field.

The report describes the work of a computer programmer thus: "A computer programmer writes computer programmes to help solve maths, engineering and scientific problems to help businesses handle tasks such as audits or payroll.

"A computer programmer writes programmes by breaking down each step into a series of instructions the computer can follow. He or she tests programmes and then prepares instruction sheets for workers.'' A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or relevant professional qualifications are required. Additional career advice can be obtained from school counsellors and talking to parents and their friends. But a visit to the Bermuda National Library can also be a rewarding choice; it has a wide range of careers-related material on hand. Among them: Careers Encyclopedia by Katherine Lea.

Careers With College Series by Linda Peterson and others.

Successful Interviewing Techniques by Charles Lipka.

The Guide to Internet Job Searching by Margaret Riley, Frances Roehm & Steve Oserman.

What Colour Is Your Parachute by Richard N. Bolles.

Enquiries about these and other books can be addressed to Ms C. Brangman at 295-2905.

Bermuda has a number of computer societies, whose members would like nothing more than to discuss careers and job opportunities in their field.

Bermuda College offers several courses for the computer-minded, from evening classes to full-time study courses. Evening classes are also available at other educational establishments. Their counsellors are always available to answer questions and offer advice, and can be reached at 236-9000.
