to 7,485 during the third quarter of calendar 1993, according to new figures released by the Registrar of Companies.
But there was a net loss of 33 local companies from the register, dropping the total to 1,853.
At September 30, 1993, there were 6,881 exempted companies doing business in Bermuda, up by 165; 173 exempted partnerships, up by eight; 431 permit companies, up by two; and 26 non-resident insurance undertakings, no change.
The number of exempted companies incorporated on the Island actually fell from 7,274 to 6,881 but fewer of these were in liquidation or in the process of removal than at the end of the previous quarter.
The rate of incorporations fell, with 199 new exempted companies joining the register between July and September, 1993, compared with 230 between April and June.
Some 234 exempted firms were struck off the register, 36 were dissolved, seven were discontinued and five were amalgamated.
No exempted partnerships were removed from the register, while there were eight new formations.
There were 23 new formations of permit companies -- firms incorporated outside Bermuda which are allowed to do business on the Island by obtaining a permit.
Twenty-one permit companies were removed from the register.
On the local front, 30 new local companies were added to the register during the quarter, 11 existing firms were struck off and five were dissolved.
But there was an effective decrease of 33 because more of the registered companies were in liquidation or in the process of removal.
Of the 1,973 local companies registered at September 30, 1993, 120 were in liquidation or in the process of removal, compared with 73 at the end of the previous quarter.
The number of local companies still doing business at the end of the quarter was 1,853, compared with 1,886 three months before.
