to pay more than $600 to the owner of a car on which he jumped.

Timothy James Brian, 28, of the US Naval Base in St. David's, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to wilfully and unlawfully damaging a car to an amount exceeding $1,160.

Vicky Benevides, who owns the car, said she left it near the Emporium on Front Street around 7.30 p.m. on January 2.

When she returned around 2.30 a.m. she found the roof of the car damaged.

She was told by witnesses that Brian had jumped up and down on it that night.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, said Brian was seen, but he could not remember causing the damage because he was intoxicated.

Brian, who was willing to make restitution, had no previous convictions.

He is due to leave Bermuda this week to undergo treatment for his alcohol problem.

"I've been given her address,'' Brian said. "I would send the payments directly to her as the money comes in.'' Benevides said she would prefer to receive less money if Brian received treatment.

She said Brian gave her $500 at court and she would be willing to accept only $300 more from him, if he got help for his problem.

A US Navy official who was in court with Brian told the Wor. Will Francis that Brian could be kept in Bermuda at the court's request.

"As the military, we cannot force him to make the payments,'' he said. "But we can highly recommend that he make the payments to the young lady.'' Brian said he could get the balance of the $1,160 by this week.

Benevides insisted that she would accept $300 and prefer to see Brian go away and get help, rather than stay longer with his problem.

Mr. Francis said: "I would like to see justice done regardless.'' He adjourned the matter for mention on January 28.
