Tour players face race against time

Cup Match this year because of the club's conflicting tour of England, they are still hoping to be available for the Americas Regional Tournament in Toronto, Canada, early next month.

Among those in the national squad travelling to England are Clay Smith, Lionel Cann, Chris Foggo and Del Hollis, as well as Glenn Blakeney who is hoping to be recalled.

The tournament in Toronto, which will also involve Canada, United States, Cayman Islands and Argentina, is scheduled to take place immediately after Cup Match with Bermuda Cricket Board of Control's squad set to fly out on August 5.

Cup Match will be played at Somerset on August 3-4.

The St. David's players making the eight-day tour of England to compete in the Millennium Tournament in Durham, starting on July 27, will be left with precious little time to get to Canada, should they be selected.

It seems likely they will have to fly directly from England to Toronto in order to play in the first game on August 7.

But Board president El James said he wasn't overly concerned about the tight schedule.

"We've worked out something with those who are currently training with the senior national squad. I'm satisfied with what has been worked out during our talks with them about their availability,'' he said.

Blakeney has been asked to write a letter to the Board confirming his availability, having told them a couple of years ago he would never play again under national coach Allan Douglas. He has since rescinded those comments and told James he wants again to be a part of the squad.

Both Cann and Foggo would have been involved with the St. George's Cup Match squad and Hollis with Somerset had they not decided to tour.

Meanwhile, Bermuda's youth squad will be in action this Friday when they play their first match against visiting Cayman Islands who arrive tomorrow.
