Furbert faces BFA charge
the harsh comments he made about referee Stuart Crockwell in Sunday's drawn FA Cup tie with Devonshire Cougars.
Furbert publicly blasted Crockwell over his handling of the match which ended in a 2-2 draw, saying: "We have had problems with Crockwell for the whole of the season.'' Yesterday it emerged that Furbert, who is also coach of one of the BFA national teams, would face Bermuda Football Association charges relating to the comments he made to a Royal Gazette reporter when he said he would be reporting Crockwell to the BFA.
Furbert suggested that Crockwell be banned from officiating in further Colts games this season after three of his players, McKonnen Hollis, Aljame Zuill and Marvin Belboda, were sent off in the space of 15 minutes in the second half of Sunday's game.
Yesterday, chairman of the Referees Committee, Gregory Grimes, expressed disappointment with Furbert's remarks.
But he also assured that referees were not beyond scrutiny and, if necessary, disciplinary action would be taken as has already happened with three officials this season.
"If a coach has a problem with a referee, the proper way to go about it is to come to the BFA,'' said Grimes. "There is a proper forum to do these things and the press is not the forum.
"We have shown in the past that we are prepared to deal with situations when they come up. We have dealt with referees this season, so we do deal with them when we get reports.
Added Grimes: "Right now we have problems with referees not showing up for games and they are being deducted their match fees. And I'm prepared to deduct a referee every time he fails to show.'' But Grimes made it clear that there was no chance that Furbert would get his wish of having Crockwell removed from his team's games.
"If we took everyone who comes in who says they didn't want a certain referee refereeing their match we wouldn't have games,'' said Grimes.
"Mr Crockwell will referee the replay on Tuesday night (tonight).''
