More wet weather on the way could slow up repairs to the traffic lights at the junction of Par-La-Ville Road and Church Street, which have been out for two weeks.

But Corporation of Hamilton engineers are aiming to have them working again by the end of the week.

Assistant to the City Engineer Mr. David Billing noted that motorists were behaving in a courteous and careful manner, obeying the temporary stop signs.

"There have been no traffic jams or accidents,'' said Mr. Billing, who has been working on the lights daily.

Mr. Billing said it was learned the outage was due to the downpour last week.

"Water got in and everything blew-up,'' he said. Not only did the wiring in the electricity poles burn out, but also in the control box on the corner of Bermudiana Road.

Mr. Billing was working on drying the box and changing circuit boards, which he had run out of and was awaiting more.

The fact the lights were not working was creating further problems by making it damper inside the box, he said.

The Corporation does not expect to have to dig up the road to get the lights working again.
