With rainfall significantly down this month and water haulers so busy that notice of a week or more is required, Works Minister Alex Scott is describing the situation as "serious'', but says there's no cause for panic.

However, the Ministry has cut back on the amount of water they are allowing truckers to take, citing concern that the water table may get too low.

"What we do not wish to do is draw off water to such a low point that salt water begins to seep into the lens.'' he said.

Mr. Scott pointed out the Ministry, in addressing the concerns, are planning to bring on line more reverse osmosis plants.

"We are about to bring on line a reverse osmosis plant in the West End and one centrally in Devonshire.'' he said.

Advising residents now to conserve water and asking them to be more patient with water truckers, Mr. Scott suggested that residents shower together and monitor toilet flushing.

"We suggested in the House to shower with someone you love.'' he said.

"We must ask folk to be prudent, even those who have wells, because those wells are drawing from the lens - the national water supply.'' The water conservation campaign will be targeted to the entire population including the Island's hotels. Mr. Scott also said hoteliers could implement water-saving practises like putting memos in guest rooms apprising them of the local water situation and inviting them to conserve as well.

Apart from April, rainfall in Bermuda has been below normal every month this year. Bermuda Weather Service forecaster James Buxton said the winter was drier than normal and says the cumulative effect is being felt now.

Rainfall to date is 19.65 inches, compared with a norm of 24.18 inches. So far this month just .96 of an inch has fallen, compared against a norm of three inches.

But there may be good news on the horizon, as rain has been forecast for later this week.
