Bermudians help out war victims
hours yesterday.
And they will have a chance to repeat the feat when another container is sent to Lindo's today.
After announcing that a third container would arrive at Lindo's, in Devonshire, over the weekend, Bermudians overwhelmed organisers with their kindness.
Ms Sallie Singleton said: "It was phenomenal. The container was filled between noon and 6 p.m.
"Once again it has proved that Bermuda is an incredible place. Dozens and dozens of people came along to give to the appeal.
"Lots of people brought food, and children brought toys. One man even bought 15 cases of fire-logs because he had heard of Bosnians having to cut up furniture in Sarajevo to make fires to keep warm. That is enterprising.'' Ms Singleton said that there was a real need for canned foodstuffs and warm clothing and blankets because of severe cold conditions in Bosnia.
Organiser Mrs. Lucy Willitts is a veteran at shipping supplies to war-torn Bosnia and Croatia.
The containers will be put on the Bermuda Container Line vessel Oleander before being shipped to New York. From there they will be carried on the Croatian Line to the port of Rijeka, and then taken overland to the town of Split for distribution.'' Mrs. Willitts, of Pembroke, who has made several visits to Bosnia, was awarded the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour in the New Year.
Last year she organised for two containers to be shipped from Bermuda to the strife-torn region.
