The bank's shares rose 40 cents or 0.8 percent to $47.90, but are still well shy of the all time high of $51.00.

Bank of Butterfield stock also gained ground, up 25 cents or 1 percent to $24.75. No other stocks traded.

The index closed up 16.85 points or 0.72 percent at 2,346.69 on a volume of 9,670 shares worth $451,495.
