Premier?s salary would be half of what George W. Bush earns
Premier Alex Scott will make half the salary of the leader of the free world if a recent Report?s recommendations are implemented.
A Report of the Ministers and Members of the Legislature Salaries Review Board, tabled in the House of Assembly on Monday.
The Report said the additional salary of the Premier should be increased to $150,000 per year and the wages of all MPs increased to $50,000.
Premier Alex Scott now earns $111,714, made up of the current MP?s salary of $39,428 and the Premier?s pay of $72,286 ? a raise of nearly 80 percent.
US President George W. Bush makes $400,000 per year, including a $50,000 expense allowance, as leader of the free world.
And British Prime Minister Tony Blair made $313,518 in 2005 but was second in a 2005 line-up of European politicians, behind the German Chancellor who earned $326,961.
The Prime Ministers of Poland, Norway and the Netherlands earned $59,414, $146,556 and $147,996 respectively in 2005.
The Report also said Bermuda?s MPs would receive a pay hike from $39,428 to $50,000 ? a 26.8 percent pay rise.reported last month that an British MP?s basic salary was $103,374 (?59,095), however, they had to run two homes ? one in London and one in their constituency ? and a support staff.
And Bermuda?s Parliamentarians were unsure yesterday how they would implement the Report?s recommendations.
?This is a little unusual as an outside body recommended it,? Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe said yesterday.
?If it came from an MP there would be a different approach. They would report to Parliament and have a debate on it.
?I felt it had to be debated, but I am not sure,? he said.
However, Finance Minister Paula Cox said on Monday it was an issue for the Speaker and was not a Ministry of Finance issue or initiative.
?If not accepted or agreed it would probably have to be debated,? Ms Cox said.
Opposition Leader Wayne Furbert said no one in the Opposition would comment about the Report at this time.
