Cowen slams Flatts snub

Flatts community activist W.A. 'Toppy' Cowen is upset that he and others who played a role in bringing to life the newly reconstructed Flatts wharf were not invited to its opening on Thursday.

On June 6, Premier Jennifer Smith and Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott reopened the wharf after several months of work had been completed by Government.

In a letter, the former chairman of the Flatts Development Committee (FDC) said: "I can't express enough disappointment on behalf of the 'dream builders' of the FDC and the village businesses that were not extended an invitation to be a part of the official opening."

The letter was written on behalf of "slighted volunteers who devoted hours of their free time... worked tirelessly over three years to transform a neglected village into a place for visitors and residents to enjoy."

Apparently, Mr. Cowen did not even realise that the event had taken place until he saw the Premier's ribbon cutting on the Thursday evening news:

"You can imagine how horrified how I was to view the official opening..."

He also blasted Government for not giving credit where credit was due:

"As the Bible says, no one follows an uncertain trumpet", the letter said.

"Leadership is about having a clear vision, articulating it well, and getting everyone enthusiastic about sharing it and above all, expressing gratitude to those who helped to achieve the goals."

Mr. Scott was unable to respond to Mr. Cowen's letter as he is off the Island and unavailable for comment.
