he has served for more than 20 years.

Bank of Butterfield Somerset staff and the local community joined up to recognise Clayton Simmons for his 23 years of service.

Teller Carlene Smith said the day was set aside to show Mr. Simmons, 69, how much he was valued by the Bank, his co-workers and the customers.

"Today is to show Mr. Simmons appreciation because no-one ever shows anyone appreciation until something bad happens,'' she explained. "We're showing our appreciation for all the things he does for the customers and staff.'' Mr. Simmons was also the guest of honour at a dinner organised by his co-workers where he was presented with a special gift.

"The staff has put together food and we will be surprising him with a plaque,'' Ms Smith said.

And the customers of the West End bank were given the chance to convey their gratitude to Mr. Simmons by signing a large card proudly displayed in the foyer.

"You really deserve this, Mr. Simmons,'' one customer called out to the man of the moment as she departed the bank.

"The best thing about this job is dealing with people,'' Mr. Simmons said.

"I love it.'' Mr. Simmons said he was surprised and very moved by all the attention and praise lavished on him.

"It was really a surprise, I had no idea,'' he said. "My wife knew about it but she didn't tell me.

"It was thoughtful of the staff to think of me.'' This was not the first time the Bank of Butterfield security guard has been thrown in the limelight.

Last July, Mr. Simmons was declared a local hero after he and two other guards tackled gun-toting bank robbers held up the bank.

Mr. Simmons was pistol-whipped by the bandits and despite blood pouring from a head wound, he gave chase to the masked and armed robbers.

Despite the traumatic incident, Mr. Simmons said he had no apprehension about returning to the job he loves.

"I have a good relationship with the people that deal with the bank,'' he added. "I really get to know them.'' MAN OF THE MOMENT -- Bank of Butterfield Somerset branch security guard and local hero Clayton Simmons was lavished with praise yesterday from customers and colleagues.
