Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale blamed the decision on "poor visibility and conditions''.

But he pledged officers would continue to keep an eye on South Shore waters, and follow up any developments.

"We are certainly mindful of Mr. DeSilva's family and the grief they are presently enduring.'' Mr. DeSilva, 62, from Smith's Parish, has been missing for five days.

The search began last Thursday when his beige Nissan station wagon was found abandoned at about 3.30 a.m. at Watch Hill Park, Smith's.

Mr. DeSilva was wearing a light blue plastic jacket and light pants.

It is thought he may have been depressed over his wife, who is in hospital in a coma.

Over the weekend Marine Police scoured South Shore waters, between Spittal Pond and Pink Beach, and Cooper Island and Hungry Bay.

Sgt. Dale said Police were grateful for the response to appeals for help.
