The Odyssey Night Club has filled the space which was once occupied by Disco 40 and Scandals but while their lay-outs are comparable, that is where the similarities end.

Odyssey offers hi-tech entertainment under the guidance of father-son team Clarence and Tracy Tucker who said they were after "a mature crowd''.

Clarence Tucker said: "I'm not stipulating ages -- just a mature crowd. If people are young and mature, that's fine, just like if they are old and want to behave like a child then they will not be tolerated.'' Tracy Tucker said the club would have something to offer all ages and would provide entertainment to visitors and locals.

Tourism Minister David Dodwell was on hand to cut the ribbon at the opening and he said: "Any place that gives the visitor somewhere else to go to is great.'' Community Affairs Minister Yvette Swan said her children had supported the club when they came home for Spring Break from college and she welcomed the opportunity to see it for herself.

"It looks quite good...quite nice,'' she said.

In addition to the acoustic offerings dished up by the club's disc jockeys, Tracy Tucker said the club was focusing on offering the visual side of music also.

Two separate nine-screen video walls grace the mirrored wall adjoining the large hardwood dance floor and these feature music videos.

However recorded music will also only be part of the parcel Odyssey presents to its patrons, he continued.

Live jazz is also being played at the club on Sundays and more live entertainment was due to follow. This included foreign and local acts, he added.

Tracy Tucker said the club had opened on January 19 and had been busy ever since, especially on the weekends when it was "packed''.

Clarence Tucker said there had been some "trial and error'' over the past weeks but operations were becoming smoother and smoother.

The club was the focus of negative publicity earlier this week when a hostile mob gathered outside it early last Sunday morning.

Police officers were called to deal with an altercation. One officer was hit in the face and two men were arrested.

Clarence Tucker stressed the incident had happened "outside the club''.

Tracy Tucker added that nothing had happened inside the club.

The security was really good inside the facility, he continued, and designed for the safety of its patrons but he was trying to figure out a way to make outside the club just as safe.

"We do have security. We have some of the finest security guards in the business,'' his father said.

Clarence Tucker said nine security guards would be on duty during the busiest nights while there would be no fewer than two working any other night.

WHAT GOES AROUND . . . Customers at the official opening of the Odyssey nightclub on Front Street gather at the round bar -- one of the features of the nightclub which remains from the days when it was the home of the Forty Thieves Club and Scandals.
