Rangers set to celebrate

Commercial League to the Second Division, Ireland Rangers are set to achieve their ultimate goal -- promotion to the Premier Division.

The club have an excellent chance of clinching the lone promotion spot, needing a win and a draw in their last two matches to achieve it.

Tonight, Rangers will meet bottom team Prospect at BAA Field (8.00) in their make-up match when victory will take them back into first place, a point ahead of Devonshire Cougars. That would then set the stage for an exciting finale on Sunday when Cougars visit Rangers at Malabar Field expecting to have to win in order to reclaim their place in the top division.

"I don't look past that (Prospect) game at all, especially with the type of players we have,'' said Ireland Rangers coach Mike Corday.

"We have some young guys and I try to keep them focused on just one game at a time. I expect to win this game but I would never say we are going to win it because we have to keep these guys focused.'' The result last Sunday that opened the door for Rangers was at Wellington Oval where Cougars could only manage a 1-1 draw with St. George's. Now, if Rangers win tonight, a draw would be all they would need on Sunday to climb into the top division just seven years after they entered the Commercial League.

"I really didn't know what the opposition in the First Division would be like,'' said Corday of this season. "After pre-season I was optimistic while at the same time realistic. Looking at the team we don't have a lot of players who have played at a high level, but we do have players who are keen and some good young players.'' Rangers switched to the Second Division last season after the division was left with nine teams when Somerset were relegated from the First but allowed to remain when Hotels dropped out of the league.

Now they could be replacing the Trojans in the Premier Division this weekend when all the promotion and relegation issues will be settled.
