The persistence and dedication required to be one of Bermuda's premier road runners has obviously rubbed off on Peggy Couper's 15-year-old daughter

Ashley has blossomed into a dazzling track performer as a first-year student at St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island. Most recently she established a new school and event record of 2:26 in the 800 metres at the New England Track and Field Championships. That time smashed the previous record of 2:30.

A week earlier Ashley made her mark as a member of the 4x400 relay team as the team set a new record at the Newport County Track and Field Championships.

Ashley hopes to parlay her success at track into a spot on the school's cross-country team this fall.

"It's her first real effort at track and we're very proud,'' said Peggy, who finished 120th overall in Monday's Marathon Derby with a time of 1:34:50.
