The money had been in a leather bag resting on the counter of the York Street store in St. George's while the man was paying for his goods on Tuesday morning.

The visitor discovered it lying among his purchases after he returned to the Princess Hotel in Pembroke when he packing to go home.

He immediately called the Police as he was about to leave the Island. The money was returned to the shopkeeper, who in the meantime had reported it as stolen, a Police spokesman said.
