to encourage investors.

A committee, set up last year to propose a plan for the 225-acre Canadian Forces Station, continues to discuss the situation.

But chairman, former Government Senate Leader, the Hon. Charles Collis, said there had been little interest. "We are holding a meeting to look at various proposals and to consider the next steps,'' he said.

"People have been making inquiries but there has been nothing serious. In these recessionary times it is difficult to get anybody to spend money. The position is not all that hopeful.'' Mr. Collis said that proposals should benefit the Island and probably involve the tourism industry.

He said that the committee had been discussing the matter overseas in an attempt to interest potential investors and developers.

And the lack of interest was disappointing in light of the Ministry of Information Services' production of 5,000 glossy brochures last month. These had been sent around the world.

The plan is to lease the land to interested parties. The area includes 34 buildings in good repair, ranging from a cycle shed to a 24-unit apartment building.

Possible uses include a high quality recreation facility with an emphasis on water sports. Mr. Collis said this would mean little change to the site.

The Canadian Forces are expected to vacate the site later this year.
