Social Club eager to slam door on Second Division
over the next three days when they close out their season against Prospect tonight and Wolves on Sunday.
It will be the club's best chance of regaining a First Division spot since they were relegated at the end of the 1979-80 season after winning just once match in the league. That miserable season was capped by an FA Cup semi-final loss to then Second Division team Warwick United who have since folded.
Since then the team that dominated local football in the 1960s has languished in the depths of the Second Division, even spending a season in the Third Division combination.
But for the Social Club faithful the return to the top flight, at least, is not far away, provided they can take maximum points from their two remaining matches. Their biggest hurdle should be tonight's enounter against Prospect at PHC Stadium (8.00).
And since their home ground, Devonshire Rec. is now closed for cricket preparations, Social Club will return to PHC on Sunday to seal what they hope will be their passage back to the First Division against Wolves. PHC Stadium was the scene where they accomplished something no other team in the Second Division has done this season, take a point off runaway champions Southampton Rangers.
In fact it was a match that Social Club can count themselves unlucky not to have won. But even that point could be in vain unless the Bluebirds pick up maximum points from their final two matches.
They trail second-placed Somerset Eagles, who have already completed their season, by three points and also have an inferior goal difference to Eagles.
However, they cannot expect any favours from a Prospect side that recently held Eagles to a 3-3 draw in the Shield semi-final.
Social Club and Prospect played to an exciting 4-4 draw earlier in the season and it could be just as close this time as Prospect not only relish the prospect of having a say in the promotion race but they are also preparing for next Tuesday's Shield replay.
Prospect have scored 19 goals in their last three outings, blasting hapless Hamilton Parish and Paget 10-3 and 6-1 in the league before and after the Eagles match.
Social Club are unbeaten in their last four matches since their 2-1 loss to Eagles on February 5. Since then they have also not conceded a goal, having netted 15 times in the process.
