Buoyant cruise ship business helps boost visitor numbers

Bermuda's cruise ships had a strong showing this week with their representatives reporting high arrival figures.

John S. Darrell spokesman Tim Southern said a "jam-packed'' Song of America arrived with 1,488 passengers and "not a cabin to spare'' on Tuesday from New York.

She berthed at St. George's along with the Royal Majesty which arrived from Boston with 1,045 passengers on Tuesday as well, he added.

Meanwhile, Meyer Agencies spokesman Stephen Paynter reported that the Zenith and the Dreamward both arrived on Monday with 1,668 and 1,456 passengers respectively.

Both vessels were out of New York and the Zenith berthed at Number One Dock in Hamilton before shifting to St. George's yesterday while the Dreamward docked at Penno's Wharf before moving to Hamilton on Tuesday.

They were both due to leave today while the Meridian -- which arrived at King's Wharf on Tuesday with 1,302 passengers on board -- was due to leave for New York on Friday.

Elsewhere, the Oleander arrived at Hamilton's container docks on Sunday with 108 dry containers and 33 refrigerated containers.

Before returning to Port Elizabeth, five cars and a 40-foot flat bed container of building materials were also off-loaded.

The Bermuda Islander arrived on Monday from Salem with 90 containers and left on Tuesday, said Mr. Paynter.

He added that the Somers Isles was due to return to Fernandina Beach today after off-loading 61 dry containers, 10 refrigerated containers, two sail boats and a jet ski since arriving on Monday.

And Harnett and Richardson spokeswoman Sylvie Swainson said the car ship Luminous Ace was due to arrive in Bermuda last night and dock in Hamilton early this morning.

She said the vessel -- which is out of Tokyo -- was due to off load 60 cars and 39 cases of parts before leaving for Nassau and Freeport.
