Jeffrey Frank Lindo, 40, of Leacraft Hill Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to stealing the money from Bay Imports Marine Services at the Heron Bay marina in Warwick on October 11.

Lindo went to the area to speak to his cousin, prosecutor Sgt. Earl Kirby told the court.

When Lindo saw no one was around he opened the cash register and took out five $20 bills.

He was confronted by one of the operators of the business, Sean White, and then returned the money.

Lindo later told Police he had an substance abuse problem and was seeking rehabilitation.

Sgt. Kirby said Lindo had convictions for dishonesty and drug offences dating back to 1975.

Lindo was last before the court in March for stealing. Then, he was fined $700.

Noting that Lindo committed the recent offence while on bail for "a more serious matter'', Sgt. Kirby suggested that a social inquiry report be carried out.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis remanded Lindo in custody until November 3 when the report is due.

But Lindo objected. "All I need is help from Addiction Services,'' he said, "not to be remanded.

"I've gone to Parliamentarians, even David Dodwell and John Swan, to put me back on methadone treatment.

"What do I have to do -- crawl up there? "Now you're remanding me. I'm going to end up losing my house. Thanks a lot.''
