Village look to stretch lead

Division leaders North Village tonight seek to pad their advantage when they tackle unpredictable Dandy Town at St. John's Field (8.00 p.m.).

The Red Devils became the first team to earn a berth in one of the more financially lucrative tournaments put on by Bermuda Football Association when they defeated Southampton Rangers last Sunday. And, after Tuesday night's round of matches, they stand two points clear at the top with 13 points compared to 11 for second place PHC.

Village also have a game in hand and could move to a commanding five point lead if all goes according to the plan of first-year head coach Scott Morton, who has performed admirably in place of Kenny Thompson.

In Dandy Town, Morton finds himself going against the club that afforded him his start as a player, but one at this time he'd sorely like to place on the losing end.

For all the talent contained at the St. John's Road institution, positive results have proven hard to come by, despite the installation of Andrew Bascome as coach.

Bascome's crew have recorded just one win in five league outings, with three draws and a loss and have six points, appearing anything but the feared challengers for top honours predicted during the pre-season.

A win for Town would allow them to leap-frog Devonshire Colts into fourth place, while anything less would mean them needing help from elsewhere to qualify for the festive event.

Conversely, the Red Devils have more than fit the bill as prime contenders, and with Morton shuffling the player deck with expert precision, a victory by the visitors would certainly come as no surprise.

Still, Village would want to be mindful of the treacherous terrain at St.

John's Field, and, even though the BFA yesterday assured the match was to be played tonight, the situation of faulty lighting at the ground remained a source of concern.

Chevonne Furbert scored a hat-trick to lead Rude Girls to a convincing 6-1 victory over Wolves in women's soccer action at Devonshire Rec. on Tuesday night. They led 3-0 at the half.

Also scoring for Rude Girls were Shivon Washington, Tameisha Darrell and Rene Furbert. Tarikia Lightbourne scored the lone goal for Wolves.
