Island shelters casualties from Tropical Storm Mitch

The Russian bulk cargo ship which was towed into the Island on Sunday will be on the Island indefinitely, a spokesman for Meyer Agencies told Docksiders.

But engineers working aboard the Kemarovo -- which shifted from St. George's to Dockyard on Monday -- were expected to finish pumping water from engine room yesterday.

The Kemarovo was en route from Houston, Texas, to Nova Scotia, Canada when the ship was forced to divert to Bermuda because of heavy seas stirred up by the remnants of Hurricane Mitch.

Two other general cargo vessels were also diverted to the Island after taking on water.

Another Russian vessel Tradenes arrived at Murray's Anchorage on Tuesday.

And the Bahamian Pascale Delmas -- en route from New York to Dakar, Africa -- also arrived early this week.

In other shipping news, the propane gas tanker Konudkosan will make a discharge for Shell at the Esso oil docks in St. George's on Sunday.

And a spokesman for Harnett and Richardson said the car ship Pearl Ace is expected next Tuesday.

The vessel is sailing out of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and will leave for Nassau, Bahamas later the same day after off-loading 130 vehicles and 45 cases of parts.

In regular shipping visitors, the Oleander delivered 137 dry and 38 refrigerated containers during her regular run this weekend.

Also on board were four trailers of steel, 38 cars, and one cement truck.

And the Bermuda Islander brought in 87 dry and 11 refrigerated containers from Salem, New Jersey, on Monday.

Meanwhile the Somers Isles delivered a cargo of 84 dry and 10 refrigerated containers, one vehicle, 57 bundles of lumber, and three bundles of pipe.

In cruising news, the season continues to wind down with only three visits left for the Norwegian Crown .

She arrived on Tuesday with 1,015 passengers and sailed yesterday.

Tomorrow the 1,693 passengers aboard the Queen Elizabeth II will spend the day in the Great Sound.

The grand dame of cruise ships is sailing from New York and will continue on her way to St. Maarten later the same day.
