Force promotions `on the way'

next four weeks. They will be the first since Police Commissioner Mr. Lennett (Lennie) Edwards took up his post in May.

Rumours have spread over rising friction among Police officers over an apparent promotions block. The post of assistant commissioner has remained vacant for months.

Mr. Edwards yesterday revealed the proposed promotions as he sought to parry criticism. New appointments included a chief inspector, two inspectors, and two sergeants.

"The matter is being addressed. It is something I have been aware of,'' said Mr. Edwards. "Naturally I accept there could be some frustration among ambitious officers over not being promoted.'' Mr. Edwards said he had had to "prioritise'' issues since taking on his job.

It was now right to consider promotions -- after he had time to consider officers' abilities. "We have to ensure we have the right man for the job,'' said Mr. Edwards.
