Passenger and container ship traffic makes for busy week in Bermuda waters

Bermuda's waterways have been busy this week with a mixture of regular and occasional callers.

Meyer Agencies spokesman George Butterfield said the Somers Isles would arrive in Bermuda today from Florida carrying 119 containers including eight refrigerated containers and one boat. She will set sail tomorrow.

The Bermuda Islander docked on Monday morning in Hamilton, bringing 76 containers, 11 refrigerated containers and two Clydesdale horses.

And Mr. Butterfield said the cable ship Sir Eric Sharpe returned to Bermuda last Friday for station duty after doing tests off the Virginia coast. On Sunday, the Oleander brought 99 containers, 32 refrigerated containers, one flat rack and seven trailers containing staging equipment for this weekend's Jazzscape.

The cargo ship set sail on Tuesday morning.

Dockyard harboured the cement ship Frida last week. The ship arrived on Friday and, after emptying her load of cement, departed Saturday. The LPG tanker Emsgas arrived at the Esso Oil terminal in St. George's last Friday and left on Saturday.

And the newsprint ship Fetish from Dalhousie paid an overnight call on Tuesday.

In cruise ship news, the Dreamward pulled into Hamilton on Monday morning from New York, with 1,185 passengers, for its penultimate visit of the season.

The Zenith also arrived in Hamilton on Monday with 1,180 passengers. Both ships are due to sail today.

The Meridian arrived from Wilmington, North Carolina, this week with 975 passengers. It is due to sail tomorrow.

John S. Darrell spokesman Marie MacPherson said the Song of America and Royal Majesty also arrived on schedule with 1,319 and 981 passengers respectively.

She also reported that the 210-foot Coast Guard cutter Resolute arrived in Dockyard on Sunday for a few days of rest and relaxation before departing yesterday.
