The Maine-registered sailing vessel Victory limped into St. George's Harbour on Saturday after being tossed about in 18- to 24-foot seas 250 nautical miles northwest of the Island.

According to a US Coast Guard report, the 45-foot sailing vessel was en route from New York to Bermuda when it encountered rough seas, lost its rudder and set off an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).

A Coast Guard C-130 rescue plane from North Carolina soon located the vessel and the three crew members who were reportedly preparing to abandon ship.

However, Coast Guard officials informed the crew that the Victory remained a safer haven.

Later, the merchant vessel Iver Splendour -- which had diverted course from 25 miles away -- was unable to take the crew on board due to high seas.

The ship stayed with the vessel throughout last Thursday night. Victory's crew eventually constructed a makeshift rudder and sailed to Bermuda unassisted.
