Road runners chase $1,000 cash bonus
Sunday for the Tropicana 10K.
The cash is being offered for any local runner who can beat the existing Bermuda 10K records -- 31.24 for men, and 35.17 for women.
In-form Jennifer Fisher, unbeaten on the road this year, is perhaps the best bet to hit the jackpot, but would need to run her fastest ever 10K on the roads to take the purse.
Brett Forgesson, winner of the last three road races, would also need a personal best, but is expected to get some help up front from top British runner Paul Freary -- winner of this year's Front Street Elite Mile -- who is scheduled to compete.
Sunday's race, over the International 10K course but starting and finishing at National Sports Club, gets underway at 9.30 a.m. It will be the sixth event in the KPMG Peat Marwick Road Running Series (latest standings, see Page 16).
Entries close tomorrow at 5.00 p.m. Forms should be returned to Wheels Ltd., Sportseller or New Winner's Edge.
Andrew Fletcher and Jenny Kahl were declared overall winners of the six-race Olympic Club 5K series following the final event yesterday lunchtime.
Among the men Mark Glusing placed second and David Yates third while female runner-up was Karen Meyer followed by Sam Miller.
Most improved runner during the series was Andrew Ward while a "dedication award'' was presented Ivor Bolton.
The Wednesday series raised $200 for the AIDS benefit telethon.
