Hotels on borrowed time
register for the new soccer season after they turned in an incomplete registration form to the Bermuda Football Association at yesterday's deadline.
There still seems to be great concern about the future of the First Division club who lost a number of senior players during the recent transfer period without adequately replacing them. Now it seems to be a matter of generating interest amongst the players who remain, with the issue of a coach still be to resolved.
"Hotels have submitted an application form for the 1993-94 season, however the application form is incomplete and we've requested and received an extension of the deadline for registration until after we call an emergency meeting of all our players and officials,'' club president Andrew Starling said in a prepared statement yesterday.
"All interested persons who have or have had a connection with Hotels International will be asked to attend an important meeting this weekend at a time and venue to be announced.'' Starling remained tightlipped about the appointment of a new coach, saying only that it was in the process of being resolved.
Hotels avoided the drop to the Second Division last season after finishing third from the bottom.
However, the exodus of players like captain Eugene (Hammer) Simmons, Franklyn Greaves, Don Lewis, Clifton Anderson, Chris Sabir, Robert Lopes and both goalkeepers Randy Darrell and Gladwin Edness has left their ranks depleted.
Walter Musson is the only established First Division player joining the team after a season back with Dandy Town.
And with top striker Ricky Hill expected to concentrate on cricket with the Bermuda national team and some of the other senior players winding down in the top flight, few expect the team to make much of an impact in the First Division next season. In fact there has been great speculation that they may be forced to withdraw from the league.
Of the players who did not transfer from the club most are over the age of 30, including Coolridge Bell, who suffered a serious leg injury towards the end of last season, Myron Piper, Derek Scott and Philip Smith.
Hotels, who were relegated at the end of the 1985-86 season, were once one of the top teams in the First Division from the mid-1970s when they won league titles in 1975 and 1980. They also picked up Martonmere Cup titles in 1981 and 1983, Friendship Trophy titles in 1983 and the FA Cup in 1985.
However, things began to go downhill in the past two seasons after losing Musson, Marlon Lindsay, Paul Towlson, Scott Morton and Neil Topping prior to the start of last season.
Morale in the team slumped last season and after Clevie Wade was fired in January they languished neared the bottom of the table, pipping St. David's for survival in the First Division by just one point.
First Division Dandy Town and Second Division Wolves are reported to have expressed an interest in Jack Castle should he decide against coaching PHC next season.
The troubled coach, who endured an indifferent rookie season with the Zebras in 1992-93, met with the club's executive on Tuesday night and will spend this weekend mulling his future.
The original decision-making was quite simple -- to coach PHC or not. Now, other clubs have come in for the 32-year-old.
Dandy Town fired Robert Calderon in mid-season and assistant Mark Trott took over the duties on an interim basis. Town's chief achievement last season was reaching the FA Cup semifinals where they lost to Boulevard after two replays.
Otherwise, they were a major disappointment and did not figure in the league championship race, finishing sixth.
Wolves were the best of the rest in last season's Second Division, which was dominated by champions Vasco and Southampton Rangers.
They finished third, five points behind Rangers and did not figure in either the Second Division Shield or FA Cup.
Wolves' coaching situation was never set with Kirt Douglas and Dion Wainwright in charge at various times. They would appear to be a distant second in the Castle race if he decides on a move from the club he has been linked to for close to 20 years.
PHC, who will likely stay inside their organisation for a coach should Castle jump ship, will be informed of his decision on Monday.
Meshach Wade and Kentoine Jennings leave for England tonight hoping to revive their English League careers.
The pair, who were axed by Hereford United near the end of last season, are heading for Premier League side Coventry City on trials, which will last two to three weeks starting Monday.
